Over the last three years I have worked hard to incorporate an environmental focus into my East London Primary school’s curriculum through the adoption of the Eco Schools programme with the aim of achieving the Green Flag award (eco-schools.org). During this time, I have been lucky enough to be supported by both my head teacher and the school’s governing body. After putting in two years of unpaid overtime and seeing my passion for the topic, along with the benefits the projects brought to improving the health and well-being the children and families, my school decide to offer me the position of Sustainability leader.
As of September 2019, I will take up my Teaching and Leadership Responsibility (TLR) as Sustainability leader. This will require me to coordinate our whole school efforts to incorporate an environmental focus into our curriculum, work closely with third parties, involve parents and children in our work as well as run campaigns that acknowledge the climate emergency we are facing.
Throughout the year, I will be updating this blog to include helpful organisations, websites and programmes that I have used, as well as the challenges that face educational leaders in making our schools more aware of the climate crisis that we are all facing together.
