Return to school, rebellion and arrest
Everyone’s back, the new school year is underway and now we are starting to have conversations about what lays before us. One of the first chats I had was with my head teacher about my involvement with XR and the work we are all trying to do to shift our school community’s focus onto the climate crisis that we are facing.
When I told her about my intentions to be involved in the Autumn uprising and the possibility of being arrested she seemed very supportive. I had worried that she would overreach and start dictating my actions outside of school or present me with nothing but the negatives. We ended up talking about DBS checks and new criminal charges having to be taken to the Governors. We also chatted about the severity of charges and section 14s (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47965614). She also recommended speaking to my union rep to get further clarification. I have since emailed the NEU for clarification about what support they can offer me in case I am arrested.
XR Educators Basecamp page has also been buzzing with discussion about teachers being arrested. One educator is currently going through the process. She is now unable to work while her DBS certificate is updated but I am remaining positive for her that that is the only issue she faces as she heads back to work.
